Landprints: On the Magnificent American Landscape

NY: Crown, 1984. First edition. Hardcover. Inscribed by Sullivan on the half-title page in a  blue pen: "For Evi, with best regards, Walter Sullivan." Uncommon signed. Sullivan was known as the "dean of science writers" and was the science editor for The New York Times. This book tells of the deep-time geological formation of the North America, including continental drift and rift, ice ages and mega floods, but it also explores "Man's impact on the landscape--sometimes beneficial, sometimes destructive." A small quarto or large octavo in gray paper boards with a red cloth spine. Black and white photos and illustrations throughout. Near fine on account of bumped lower corners; in a very good jacket with a few short tears to edges, corner wear, and some scratching to rear panel. Though Sullivan was a popular writer, arguably the predecessor to John McPhee, his books seem uncommon signed--a nice find. Near fine / Very good. Item #1179
