Alexander is described as a "businessman-environmentalist," and here he takes a look at the problem of waste from the perspective of someone who has worked in the waste and recycling industries. The book starts with a historical view of garbage ("In the Beginning . . . There Was Garbage") and transitions to the dilemma of our contemporary "throwaway society." As the jacket says: "Alexander proposes that the problem does not necessarily lie with the quantity of our resources, population growth, affluence, or with space or pollution, but rather with politics, fear, and misinformation."
