Future without Shock (association copy)

NY: Norton, 1974. First edition. Hardcover. An association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper in blue ink: "To my friend Bob Malott, with my very best wishes, Louis B. Lundborg, July 27, 1974." Uncommon signed.

Lundborg was the Chairman of the Board of Bank of America, and here he interprets the societal change of the early 70s and offers concrete suggestions toward a better society. Later chapters such as "Your Own Cubic Foot of Clean Air," " Ownership or Stewardship?" and others present a substantial environmental vision. A book in conversation with Future Shock by Alvin Toffler, and cited as recommended reading by Robert Cahn in his Footprints on the Planet.

An association copy: the recipient, Robert Malott, was an influential Chicago businessman and philanthropist. He was CEO of the FMC corporation, which, interestingly, started as a maker of insecticides. He was also passionate about outdoor adventure, for example:  "Malott ran the Colorado River in a wooden dory during the filming of a 1960 documentary about John Wesley Powell which led to a sixty-year membership in the Explorers Club."
