Mangelsen spent eight years photographing polar bears and their associates (arctic foxes, ptarmigan, and more) and here showcases the reward alongside Canadian naturalist Fred Bruemmer's writing about a mother and cubs and a lone male across a full cycle of seasons. Though better known for writing his about snow leopards, Peter Matthiessen did write in defense of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Oversize quarto in black cloth with silver lettering and a pictorial plate at center that matches the jacket. A fine book except for a slight lift to front board; in a fine dust jacket.
